But did you know that the spices we love in pumpkin spice are deeply rooted in biblical history and Jewish traditions? Here’s how:
Biblical Connections to Fall
Spices:
- Cinnamon (Exodus 30:23-25): A key ingredient in sacred anointing oil, cinnamon symbolized purity and holiness in the Bible. It was part of the blend used to anoint priests and the Tabernacle.
- Cassia (Psalm 45:8): Similar to cinnamon, cassia was used in perfumes and incense, representing luxury and
devotion.
- Cloves and Nutmeg: These were part of ancient trade routes and prized for their medicinal and aromatic qualities, often found in Jewish and Middle Eastern cuisine.
Spices in Jewish Traditions:
- Shavuot and Sukkot:
Celebrations often feature desserts and dishes infused with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. These spices symbolize warmth, abundance, and God’s provision during the harvest season.
- Dairy Treats: The Torah is likened to nourishing milk, and eating dairy is very common on Shavuot. Traditional Jewish holiday dishes like kugel and cheesecake often include cinnamon, adding a rich, warming flavor that links ancient
traditions to our modern tables.
A Heart of True Thanksgiving
As we enjoy the wonderful smells and flavors of this season, let’s not forget the deeper, spiritual meaning of Thanksgiving. Beyond the celebrations and delicious food, at the heart of it all is thankfulness.
The Bible reminds us:
- “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
No matter where we are in life, we need to cultivate a heart of
gratitude toward God. If He never did another thing for us beyond coming and dying for our sins, that alone would be enough to be thankful for—for the rest of our lives and into eternity. And yet, He continues to bless us daily.
If you woke up this morning and have breath in your lungs, thank Him. If you
have family or friends to celebrate this marvelous season with, know that you are extravagantly blessed. Let’s ask God for His eyes and heart this season, so we can truly see all the blessings He bestows upon us.
The greatest blessing we will always have to be thankful for is Jesus and the countless
gifts He bestows upon us. From the small, everyday wonders—a breathtaking sunset, a fluttering butterfly, the comfort of clean sheets, or the crisp scent of autumn—to the more significant moments, we find endless reasons to express gratitude. 🙏🍁
And let’s not forget one more blessing this season
brings: post-Thanksgiving sales! 🛍️✨ These sales not only help us save money (and who doesn’t love that?) but also allow us to kick off our holiday shopping with intention. It’s the perfect opportunity to share the spiritual, mental, and physical blessings God has given us with others. 🎁💖
Whether through thoughtful gifts or uplifting resources, let’s use this season to spread joy and wellness in all areas of life!
