We were on a cruise with some friends and you know what cruises are known for……… unlimited food.
Although that is not my struggle on a cruise, as I usually lose weight since there is so much more to do than eat. But most people eat too much on a cruise.
So I was shocked at our formal
dinner with this man with us ordered 2 entrees, soup and 2 desserts.
He is not an overweight person.
Then, when the food kept coming, he reached a point and said,
“If I take one more bite, I will be sinning.”
Wow – how often do you hear that when it comes to food?
I was happy to hear it and then happier to see him just stop eating when he reached satisfied.
That is the secret to a healthy weight
FOREVER!
Yes, it is that simple.
Stop at satisfied.
Yet, what is it called when we don’t stop at satisfied?
Cover your eyes if you are not ready to read this.
It is
gluttony.
How would you define gluttony?
Webster’s lays it out like this:
Excess in eating or drinking.
Greedy or excessive indulgence.
Now, let’s break that down. What’s “excess”?
It’s going beyond what’s usual, necessary, or normal.
But gluttony isn’t just about overeating. It’s deeper. It’s letting cravings take control, putting
food and earthly pleasures above God.
Here’s where it hits hard:
Philippians 3:19 says,
“Their end is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their minds are set on earthly things.”
Read that again: their god is their stomach. Yeah, that one stings😰.
Following God makes verses like this stir something deep. It’s like a wake-up call to get our
hearts and minds in line with Him.
And yet, gluttony is the sin no one talks about. When’s the last time you heard a sermon on it? 🤔.........................Exactly.
But the Bible doesn’t shy away from it. Gluttony is called out as idolatry, selfish indulgence, and rebellion.
Ouch, right?
Look, this isn’t easy stuff, especially if the struggle is real. I’ve been there—overweight, unhealthy, and in a place I never wanted
to be.
But here’s the good news: Freedom is possible.
The Bible gives us the plan:
Galatians 5:16
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
1 Corinthians 9:27
“No, I discipline my body and bring it under strict control, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.”
And
why?
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
So, here’s the challenge: Start small. Just one thing.
Leave a spoonful of food on your plate when you’re full.
Swap those chips for a healthier homemade
version.
Take one step into fasting.
Read the Bible when sugar craving strikes.
Pray and ask God what He wants you to change.
Whatever it looks like, this is the weekend to make the move.
Let’s break up with gluttony and get our stomachs off the throne and put God back where He belongs.
